James M Barrett

I have an MA Fine Art (with distinction) from Goldsmiths College University ofLondon, and an MA Cultural Studies (with distinction) from Thames Valley University, London.

My work originally featured in The Whitworth Gallery’s National Young Contemporaries (Manchester), South London Art Gallery, Riverside Studios and Goldsmiths Gallery (all London).

For 15 years I was in a collaborative duo with Robin Forster. We had solo shows at venues like: the Australian Centre for Photography (Sydney), N Melbourne Town Hall (Australia), Cambridge Darkroom Gallery, Castlefield Gallery and The Green Rooms (both Manchester). Also in London venues such as The Museum of Installation, Rear Window, and Harvey Nichols Department Store.

Internationally our work was shown by the Australian National Gallery, Sydney Museum of Contemporary Art and Experimenta (Australia), Hong Kong Arts Centre, MAMA (Rotterdam), Gallery Art Kitchen (Amsterdam), Hal Bromm Gallery (NY), Berkeley Art Museum (USA), Duke University (USA), Naarden Photography Festival (Netherlands), and a FNAC 3 year touring exhibition (across Europe).

Our work was also shown in London spaces such as: The National Portrait Gallery John Kobal Portrait Awards, Victoria & Albert Museum, Institute of Contemporary Arts, Catto Contemporary, Gasworks, Association Gallery, E1 Gallery, Gallery Westland Place, Financial Times, Abbot Meade Vickers, Sadlers Wells Theatre, and The Centre for Freudian Analysis. Also in wider UK venues like Manchester City Art Gallery, Manchester Cornerhouse, Walsall New Gallery, MAC Gallery (Birmingham), Harley Gallery (Nottingham) and Nottingham Castle Museum.

We were shortlisted on 3 consecutive years for the Association of Photographers’ Awards, and were City of Senigallia Arte Viva prize winners (Italy).

This new portrait series is my first major art project after a break of several years. The images have featured in several magazine commissions, and in various group shows, including Clifford Chance, Strand Gallery and Riverside Studios. I also undertake regular private portrait commissions.
